Week 06 Origination

Reading Quiz

Answer the following questions as succinctly as possible in your own words

1. Describe the relationship between complexity and simplicity
"Complexity and simplicity need each other" without one the otherone doesnt stand out and cant be appreciated. With both elements it becomes balanced, you cant have it too simple or too complex.

2. What analogy does Maeda use to demonstrate this relationship?
He uses the analogy of a song as its developed over time. If it was drawn as a line with complexity at the highest point and simplicity at the lowest the line would be a consistent up and down motion, with changes in both simplicity and complexity.

3. In what context does Maeda discuss rhythm / beat in relation to the fifth law
Contextualise this relationship and discuss how this can be used in relation to the
Student Exhibition - giving specific examples
Maeda uses rhythm to describe the audiences reaction to design. In a beat there are different lengths of beats mixed with some blanks. Without a different range to mix it up it can get very dull and boring.
In regards to the exhibition, we can apply this rule into our designs by keeping it complex in quality such as graphics and print quality but simple in its quantity keeping it easy for the eye.

4. HOMEWORK: Find visual examples - pieces of design & multimedia work that
demonstrate the relationship between simplicity and complexity – post the results
on your blog, with contextual analysis and reflection

The iPod is a very simple design in terms of its physical appearance. But in terms of the software it is more complex but that is also balanced out by the functionality of how you use it with simple icons and buttons.
This is a design i found off google images that I found was simple but complex. It is simple in the use of only text as the focal point and large black space around the image which draws focus to the text. The complexity is in the concept of the text.

  1. AN ok blog, but you still need to pay closer attention to the Power Points. You need to address everything specifically and exactly.

You have mentioned a graphic "I found off Google", but there is no REFERENCE! You need to post the URL to get ticked off for this week.

There also no mention of the 6 Thinking Hats exercise.

Please revisit this blog and complete - it's required! Check your Task 02 sheet again.

  2. Rachel,

Your Exhibition blog is missing Weeks 01 – 03 Origination.

You were asked to do these on the Task sheet in Week 1.

Please check out items 02 & 03 in the REQUIRED ITEMS checklist.
I am giving you an extension until Monday 29th. August 4pm. to complete these missing weeks.
    Please email me when done.

I understand that sometimes life can get in the way of study,
but if there is some legitimate reason why you cannot finish Tasks,
you need to advise me BEFOREHAND by email.
