Week 09 Callaboration

In today's class we discussed vanity and ego. We all agreed that they effect the designer as they put themselves and there deigns above others even though it may or may not be the case. If you think too much of yourself it can stop you from growing and learning as a designer. It stops you from receiving constructive criticism and therefor developing your designs.

Group Exercise - Discussion

Vanity & Ego Discuss these questions in relation to a group creating a design in collaboration

01 – Are you capable of being vain about your art & design?
Sometimes, but generally not. I am a harsh critic when it comes to my work but when I am proud sometimes it can rise up..

02 – Do you have a healthy ego?
Yes, I believe I do.

03 – What defines an unhealthy ego?
An unhealthy ego is where you put yourself above others and look down on them. It is where you believe you are better then everyone else even though that may or may not be the case. It is the attitude that reflects your ego.

04 – When others want to change your ideas, do you get offended?
Sometimes, depends if I am proud of my work or not. Other times I really appreciate a second opinion and constructive criticism, as I can be a bit harsh in judging my work.

05 – When you are asked for opinions on other’s work, do you compare it to your own?
Yes, sometimes I do naturally but I will always bring myself down or up to there level and judge from there level of skill and talent.

06 - When you are asked for opinions on your work, do you compare it to others?
Yes, I am quite critical of my work and I do judge my work according to others.

07 – If somebody plagiarized your work, would you be proud?
No, I would be frustrated and would want to take it back. I wouldn't mind it if they bought it, but otherwise its stealing.

08 – What is the difference between pride in your work, and vanity about your work?
Pride is being proud and vanity is an unhealthy ego that puts yourself above others.

09 – Do you expect others to listen when you speak?
No, but I do appreciate it when they do. I am generally a quiet person and more a listener then a speaker.

10 – When somebody else speaks are you thinking about what you are going to say
next?
No, I listen to what they are saying and respond afterwards.

11 – Do you form opinions about others quickly?
Yes, it is natural to judge by first impressions. But other opinions are developed after I learn more about the person.

12 – What percentage of your judgements about others talents are right?
60% - I am still young and don't know all that's out there and I have just got out of school. But I believe I have a good eye and can judge fairly according to skill and talent.

Blog Exercise – Idea Evolution

In regard to creative collaboration: Discuss these questions - write a paragraph on each and use examples

1 . Do you have a strong belief in your personal ideas?
Yes, most of the time. Because they are personal ideas that I have thought of. I can uselly picture the idea in my head and then I will apply it by drawing, writing or using a design program. It is for my personal satisfaction. There are ideas I have strong beliefs in and others im not so sure about, but I work with it and modify it till I am happy with it. For example, with my 2D design on the band t shirt, I have a strong belief in my idea but would like to develop it to be the best it can be according to my skill and talent level.

2. How do you evaluate your personal ideas over a period of time?
In the past year I have had a lot more time to create things because I am studying it at uni. The more I research others works and see whats out there and the more I design my own work, the more I know what to expect. As I develop a portfolio and a library of research, this helps me to evaluate my work and gain further ideas and inspiration.

3. How flexible are you in changing your mind about the value of your ideas?
When my heart is set on an idea it is sometimes hard to change, but I appreciate the honest opinions of others. It is hard to change my mind on the value of my ideas because most are personal and I am attached in some way or another. Kind of like a child but obviously not in the same extreme. I believe however it is good to be flexible, because that is how you learn and grow as a designer.

4. How flexible are you in changing your mind about the value of others’ ideas?
I am usually quite flexible, however I am quite set on what I like and don't like about certain designs, but that is a personal opinion on my likes. I do try to appreciate all styles of design and try to look at it from other angles. For example I personally really like modern design and find it hard to make anything other then that. I like clean lines, I understand the importance of space and tidiness. I would like to broaden my skills in other areas of design. However, I do believe I have a good eye for design and I can tell if its good or bad design for that particular style.

5. Does hanging on to your old ideas block new ones?
I have noticed this happens a fair bit. I will be set on a particular idea and wont want to let go of it. As a person I don't like change. I feel comfortable in my box and if something happens to change that I can get defensive because of fear that it wont turn out. According to design I am the same, I have noticed that a lot of the time my teachers have said 'why don't you start again or do another idea'. It will be hard to let go because my heart is already set on that design and feel comfortable. However, I have noticed this is effective when I have done it, as it broadens my ideas. I have also found that the original idea is not always the best.

6. Are you slow or fast in moving on when an idea has burnt out?
Usually slow. But if i know it wont work out I usually lose passion for it and will try something different. If I am attached to it its usually a bit harder. For example, I was proud of my CDU Exhibition logo but when it didn't make it it was a little hard to let go of. But now I am happy with Josie's design and I like where it is going. Its healthy to let go and go with the flow, otherwise you cant grow as a designer.
