Week 12 Origination

GROUP PROJECT

In class we got into groups and chose a topic from the list below to research and find a Youtube link.

1. Communication Methods
2. Emerging Technologies
3. Idea adaptation

After we had 20 minutes to find a video each, we then had to find the best and present it to the rest of the class.

First up was Warwick and Josie's group, who researched Emerging technologies. They presented the new evolving ipad. Which is large and highly interactive. The video clip showed the functionality well, showing off the cool ways of moving things, zooming in, browsing the internet, etc. After we watched the video we brainstormed ways in which we could use an ipad in the exhibition.

Then it was our groups turn and we chose to show my video. I first explained briefly that it is a documentary by Adobe on the evolution on communication. It is a really great video clip that shows how technology has transformed to today.

After we watched the clip we then discussed how we can apply these different forms of communication into our exhibition. We discussed the possibility of a facebook event and sharing it on our walls for our friends and family to see. The event would be good because it can remind the public amongst there busy lives.

After our presentation it was then the third groups turn. They then showed the following video that showed how a simple idea can be expanded to create something new.

Away
In my design process I often leave my design and go and do something else so that when I come back I am refreshed. For example when we have our breaks during class they are always helpful.


Open 
In class we openly discussed issues and we all put in and gave feedback which helps in the process of the design as you can gain new and fresh insight.


Power
Power and energy was put into creating my 3D Design. I had to go out and collect all my materials and ive still got a fair bit to go.

3. Describe an incident in the production of TEN SQUARED where technology has been an enabler.... and another where it has been a disabler!

When creating ten squared we used technology. We used the mac computers with Adobe Illustrator. It was effective in creating it however I had problems with my hard drive when trying to upload my design. It took ages to recognise and therefor couldn't present. But finally it did and I presented my idea on the splash effect flyer.

4. At this stage in the exhibition process you are all working on some element or process for the big event. List 3 things (in your current project) that you could take away to simplify and one thing you could add for meaning.

1. Not as many chickens on my 2D print
2. Simple line and colour
3. Simple frame.


Add the title Individuality as the title.

Group Exercise - DISCUSSION

Reflection

Discuss these questions in relation to a group creating a design in collaboration

01 – What is the difference between reflection and criticism?
Reflection is looking at the circumstances and the overall design and criticism is the opinions to improve on something unless it is positive criticism.

02 – Can you reflect while you are designing?
yes, it is always good to reflect on your process and know what direction your heading in.

03 – Do you set aside time for reflection?
Yes, I often think about what im doing, and i think more time doing would improve my effectiveness.

04 – Do you make notes on your reflections?
Yes, if i come up with ideas i write them down, for our course we have to blog so i have been reflecting and writing them into my blog.


05 – When is the best time to reflect?
When you are stuck and when you are unsure. Also if you are on a roll with your work and need to slow down for a sec and see how your going and other options. 

06 – Do you compare your work to work by your heroes?
I dont really have any design heroes. I do get inspiration from other work. But i don't really compare.

07 – How do you benefit by comparison?
Comparing myself to other works can be good and bad. You cant compare yourself to amazing designers because of disappointment but you can certainly be inspired by them.

08 – What can be a disadvantage of comparison?
Disappointment and discouragement

1 . Are you brave enough to move on and adopt new and unexpected ideas?
Yes and no. Im a person who doesn't like change. afraid of failure. However if i am inspired by something and i believe it can work and i can visualise it in my head then i usually go for gold.

2. Describe how you have encouraged others with a solution to their design problems
I have been asked my opinion on other peoples works which I feel privileged by.  I usually give my feedback and solutions to enhance it.

This video explains the difference between a positive and negative response to critisism and the reasons why we use them. It also shows good ways to act and things to say to question the other person if you are unsure or dont agree with what the other person is saying.

Failure 

1. Using Ten Squared as an example, describe an aspect of your work or something
you have worked on, where you have found a symbiotic relationship that is both
complexity and simplicity.
I have been working on a chandelier idea that is simple in the idea and the concept but to create it has taken a lot of thought into what materials would be most effective and work well. The creating bit is a lot more complex then the physical result.

2. Provide a conceptual example of a situation that has arisen during this project
where you have had a return on failure?
My design for the exhibition logo came back from the CDU design team and they didn't approve. The class liked it but it wasn't what they were looking for.

I like this image above with the quote saying "Its hard to fail, but it is worse to never have tried to succeed". I like it because it shows how it is worse of to not try and live in regret of not knowing what we could have achieved. It is better to fail and learn from it then not try and not learn from it.

3. Homework: How are you using the laws in relation to your contribution to The
Ten Squared exhibition? Provide a short explanation and example for TWO of

The simplest way to achieve simplicity is through thoughtful reduction.

Knowledge makes everything simpler.

For the exhibition logo I have applied the law of reduction. I simple text and the icon, the use of only two colours, red and black, and the bold lines kept the logo simple, effective and catchy. I also used the law of reduce. I made sure I kept it simple by reducing the details of the bird and applied the live trace effect to make it a flat black vector.
